What I Wore to a Nigerian Wedding

Living in the United States, I always eagerly anticipate attending a Nigerian wedding. They’re bursting with energy and color, and being Nigerian, they hold a special place in my heart. There’s something truly magical about the way we celebrate our culture and traditions, from the vibrant music to the delicious food—it’s a joyous occasion like no other.

As I got ready for the wedding, I couldn’t help but feel a rush of excitement. Dressing up for a Nigerian event isn’t just about fashion—it’s about honoring my heritage. This time, I chose to wear a stunning dress custom-made in Nigeria. It beautifully blends traditional elements with a modern touch, reflecting the rich tapestry of our culture.

One of the fun parts of getting ready was figuring out how to tie my gele, which is a type of headscarf. I’m still new to it, but I practiced until I got it just right. It added a touch of glamour to my outfit, which I loved. The weather was so nice that day, and I felt really good showing off my outfit. The colors of the dress looked even better in the sunshine. It was a nice change from wearing lots of layers like I usually do in colder weather.

For accessories, I chose a pair of statement earrings gifted to me by my mom. Their bold design added just the right amount of sparkle to my look, while I opted to forgo a necklace to let the dress’s ruffles shine.

As a busy mom, I don’t always have time to go to the nail salon. That’s why I like using press-on nails. They’re quick and easy to put on, and they make my nails look really nice. I went for a classic French tip look, which I thought went well with my outfit.

Heading to the wedding, I felt proud to represent my Nigerian heritage even though I’m far from home. Even though I’m miles away, I still feel connected to my culture. Every part of my outfit reminded me of where I come from.

Nigerian weddings are more than just fancy attires—they’re celebrations of love, family, and tradition. Dancing and rejoicing with loved ones, I felt immensely grateful to be part of such a cherished occasion. Here’s to many more celebrations filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
