How to become the best version of yourself

Lifestyle blogger

In the world of social media where we are constantly having a peek into everyone’s life, looking at their vacations, fancy careers, houses, you name it. It’s so easy to get lost into an idealized version of who we are supposed to be. In order to fully hone in our uniqueness, the only thing you should be focusing on is how to become the best version of yourself. Not how to be more like your favorite influencer or celebrity but how to truly live in a way that honors who you are at your core.

Growing up, I was an avid reader, especially of non-fiction and fantasy novels. Non-fiction, particularly self-improvement books, fascinated me because they showcased all the possibilities life has to offer. I loved reading memoirs about people who transformed their lives by making conscious choices. Inspired by these stories, I am committed to building a life I’m proud of, filled with love, creativity, and adventure.

If you are currently on the path of self discovery and self improvement, good news : WE ALL ARE! It’s an ongoing walk, there is no final destination, just a more refined you at every step of the way.

Here are some tips that would propel you forward in your journey to become the best version of yourself ;

Quiet the noise, listen within

There’s too much chatter in our world today. So many “hot takes” on how you should think, act and feel. In order to truly become the best version of yourself, you need to silence all that and hone into your inner voice.

Practical exercise : Sit in silence at least once a day, a few times a week or whatever works for you. No podcast, headphone, music or any background noise. Just you and your thoughts. Have a notepad/journal in hand. Write down whatever comes to mind. It could be about your dreams, family, love life, or anything you want. Sit with your thoughts a while and really listen to your wants, desires and perspectives. Try to avoid any outer influence or external expectations. Carve out time to do this regularly. Over time, you will notice a shift in your way of thinking. You will move from “what is everyone doing, let me jump on the bandwagon” to “what do i truly want”.

Adopt Simple Practical Systems to Stay Organized

Staying organized is key to managing your time, reducing stress, and achieving your goals. Simple, practical systems can help you keep track of your tasks, manage your time efficiently, and create a more productive environment.

Practical Exercise:

  • Use a Planner or Digital Calendar: Whether you prefer a physical planner or a digital calendar, use it to schedule your tasks, appointments, and deadlines. This helps you visualize your day, week, and month, ensuring you allocate time for everything important.
  • Create To-Do Lists: Break down your tasks into manageable steps and list them in order of priority. This not only makes large projects feel less overwhelming but also gives you a sense of accomplishment as you check off completed tasks.
  • Implement the Two-Minute Rule: If a task can be completed in two minutes or less, do it immediately. This prevents small tasks from piling up and becoming a larger burden.
  • Declutter Regularly: A clutter-free environment can significantly improve your focus and productivity. Regularly clean and organize your workspace and living areas to create a more pleasant and efficient environment.

Cultivate High-Value Habits

High-value habits are those that contribute significantly to your personal growth, well-being, and success. Cultivating these habits can transform your life by enhancing your productivity, health, and overall happiness.

Practical Exercise:

  • Morning Routine: Establish a morning routine that sets a positive tone for your day. This could include activities like meditation, exercise, reading, or planning your day. A consistent morning routine can boost your productivity and mood.
  • Reading: Develop a habit of reading regularly. Reading expands your knowledge, improves your focus, and stimulates your mind. Aim to read a mix of fiction, non-fiction, and self-improvement books.

Invest in Educating Yourself

Continuous learning is crucial in personal development. Education doesn’t just mean formal schooling; it includes acquiring knowledge and skills that can enhance your life and career. This could be through online courses, reading books, attending workshops, or learning from mentors. The more you know, the more opportunities you can create for yourself.

Practical Exercise: Dedicate a specific amount of time each week to learning something new. This could be related to your career, a hobby, or a new skill you’ve always wanted to master. Use platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or even YouTube to find valuable content.

Practice Delayed Gratification

Delayed gratification involves resisting the temptation of an immediate reward in favor of a larger or more enduring reward later. This practice is crucial for achieving long-term goals and building self-discipline.

Practical Exercise:

  • Set Long-Term Goals: Clearly define your long-term goals and remind yourself of them regularly. This helps you stay focused on the bigger picture and resist short-term temptations.
  • Create a Reward System: Develop a system where you reward yourself for achieving milestones towards your long-term goals. This keeps you motivated and reinforces positive behavior.
  • Practice Self-Control: Work on building your self-control by setting small challenges for yourself. For example, try to delay a small pleasure, like eating a snack, for a set period. Gradually increase the difficulty of these challenges to strengthen your self-discipline.
  • Visualize Success: Regularly visualize the benefits of achieving your long-term goals. This helps reinforce the value of delayed gratification and keeps you motivated to stay on track.
  • Avoid Impulse Triggers: Identify situations or triggers that lead to impulsive behavior and find ways to avoid or manage them. This might involve avoiding certain environments, using apps that limit your access to distractions, or seeking support from friends or family.

Prioritize Your Health

Your mental and physical health are the foundations of a productive and fulfilling life. Prioritizing these areas will ensure that you have the energy, resilience, and clarity to pursue your goals.

Practical Exercise:

  • Physical Health: Create a regular exercise routine that fits your lifestyle, whether it’s going to the gym, jogging, or even dancing. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Also, focus on a balanced diet that provides the nutrients your body needs.
  • Mental Health: Practice mindfulness or meditation regularly. This can help reduce stress and improve your mental clarity. Additionally, don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you need it. Talking to a therapist or counselor can provide valuable insights and coping strategies.

Prioritize real-life connections over a perfect digital image

In the age of social media, it’s easy to get caught up in curating a perfect online persona. However, real-life connections are what truly enrich our lives. These connections provide support, joy, and a sense of belonging that can’t be replicated online.

Practical Exercise: Make a conscious effort to spend more time with family and friends. Plan regular meet-ups, engage in activities you enjoy together, and be present during these interactions. Limit your social media usage to ensure it doesn’t interfere with your real-life relationships.

Cultivate Your Own Unique Sense of Style

Your personal style is an extension of who you are. Cultivating a unique sense of style can boost your confidence and help you express yourself authentically.

Practical Exercise: Experiment with different fashion trends to discover what makes you feel comfortable and confident. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new looks. Remember, your style should reflect your personality and values, not just current trends.

Connect with Like-Minded People

Surrounding yourself with people who share your values and interests can provide motivation, support, and new perspectives. These connections can be incredibly beneficial for your personal and professional growth.

Practical Exercise: Join clubs, organizations, or online communities that align with your interests. Attend networking events, workshops, and social gatherings. Engage in meaningful conversations and be open to forming new friendships.

Build Marketable Skills to Reach Your Income Goal

Building skills that are in demand can significantly enhance your career/business prospects and help you achieve your financial goals. This not only increases your employability but also allows you to negotiate better salaries and even start your own business.

Practical Exercise: Identify the skills that are highly valued in your industry. This could be technical skills like coding or soft skills like communication and leadership. Invest time in developing these skills through courses, certifications, or practical experience. Regularly update your resume and LinkedIn profile to reflect your new skills and accomplishments.

Know that it’s a Journey, Not a Destination

Personal development is an ongoing process. There will always be room for growth and improvement. Embrace the journey and be patient with yourself. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and keep pushing forward.

Practical Exercise: Reflect on your progress regularly. Set aside time each month to review your goals and achievements. Adjust your plans as necessary and stay committed to your personal growth journey.

As you embark on your journey to become the best version of yourself, remember that it’s a deeply personal and unique path. Embrace the process with patience and kindness towards yourself. Celebrate your small victories, learn from your challenges, and stay true to your own values and desires. Surround yourself with positivity, seek inspiration, and never stop growing. Keep moving forward, and enjoy every step of your incredible journey.
